The Humane Society of Louisiana recently received several disturbing complaints from visitors to the St. Bernard Animal Control Shelter, located on Agriculture Road, in Chalmette. Humane Society of Louisiana officials visited the facility in late March of 2007 and found dozens of violations of acceptable humane guidelines. The group documented that the shelter did not have any working electrical outlets, a proper drainage system, or sufficient ventilation.
Nursing cats and kittens were also housed in a steel storage container!
The Humane Society forwarded their inspection shelter report along with photos to parish officials. After waiting a week to receive a response from the parish administration, humane society officials held a press conference on the steps of the shelter and exposed the conditions to a wide television audience.
After the story became public, parish officials promised to address the issues. The Humane Society intends to continue to monitor the situation. |
